Judkins Rink Improvement Project (JRIP)
The Judkins Rink is a multi-sport community rink in the Judkins Park neighborhood of Seattle’s Central District. 12 years ago, Seattle Bike Polo converted unused tennis courts to a double rink, adding boards and a storage locker. Numerous community groups make ample use of the rink in Seattle’s dry summer months, but during the dark, rainy months the Judkins Rink goes mostly unused. Seattle Roller is working with a coalition of community groups to secure public and private financing to build a roof and lighting at the Judkins Rink.
Community Engagement
Hockey is the greatest game on earth, but it’s one of the least diverse. Low-income folks and communities of color are severely under-represented in everything from youth hockey, all the way up to the NHL. We seek to change that, through exposure events, coaching, and organizing tournaments, so people who aren’t already familiar with the game can learn the joys of hockey.
Project Joyland
Seattle is a world class city, a destination for conferences, corporate events, and more. It’s also home to one of the newest hockey teams in the NHL. Seattle deserves a state-of-the-art destination roller and street hockey facility. That’s what Project Joyland seeks to create. Joyland is a vision for a multi-purpose, high-end, double-rink, attached to a pro-shop and a hockey bar that is also a music venue. It’s a vision for a multi-revenue sustainable business, committed to growing hockey and building community in the Greater Seattle area.
